Class registration processes vary by program. Most students self-register using Course Listings, while other students in highly structured programs may be administratively registered.

Regardless of method, students are responsible for knowing their programs’ requirements and registration policies to maintain eligibility to enroll.

Students should familiarize themselves with course numbers and how they correspond to program levels, as well as the codes used on courses to denote the areas taught and the departments and units offering them.

Academic Advising

We consider advising to be an important part of a student’s educational experience. Most students are therefore required to meet with their academic advisor prior to registration each semester.

Class Schedule

Check class listings, dates and times, availability and build your schedule with the university’s online class schedule.

Academic Record Holds

Students who have a hold on their academic records are not allowed to register for additional coursework. All students should check before registration to verify there are no holds on their records. Students with records on hold should check with the related department to address the outstanding requirement so the hold can be released.

Registration Tips for Students

Know Important Dates

Check the registration schedule to verify the date on which registration will begin, visit the academic calendar for registration deadlines.

Make an Appointment

Many programs require advising before registration. Make an appointment with your advisor/s well in advance of the start of registration.

Consulting with advisors is also helpful to navigate the curriculum and stay on track toward graduation.

Design Your Schedule

Students with declared programs should verify what requirements they still have to meet and plan their schedule to account for requirements and any electives they wish to pursue.

Undeclared undergraduate students may wish to browse through the course catalog and review various majors and minors to consider how courses they are interested in may apply to requirements.

The Inter-University Exchange Program

Washington University participates in a consortium agreement with St. Louis University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis to facilitate certain types of course enrollment.
