Students should verify whether they are eligible to register themselves for a class section, or will need additional permission/administrative assistance.
In order to participate in registration, students must:
- Have in-progress status effective the start date of the term in question (e.g. reinstated from time away)
- Have a registration appointment according to the registration schedule
- Have no registration holds
Registering for a class in self-service requires two layers of permission, both of which are checked when students use saved schedules to prepare for registration.
Courses may be restricted to students in certain majors or programs, by level (e.g. “first-year students only; graduate students only”) or require completion of a specific course. If applicable, these requirements are listed on course sections and must be met for a student to be eligible to register.
- Students may submit an “eligibility override” request directly on the course section in Workday if they have access to register themselves but are not eligible due to an unmet pre- or co-requisite. These requests route to different officials depending on the school offering the course.
Schools restrict their students’ eligibility to register themselves in courses offered by other schools. These restrictions are in place typically because such courses are generally not applicable to the student’s program or they require advice in order to pursue.
Specifically:
- Traditional undergraduate students have access to register themselves for undergraduate courses offered by the traditional Danforth schools. They also have access to register for graduate courses in their own schools, and graduate courses in other traditional Danforth schools, except Arts & Sciences students, who do not have access to register for graduate Olin and Sam Fox courses.
- Danforth graduate students generally have access to register themselves for graduate courses on the Danforth campus with limited exceptions, and undergraduate courses with some exceptions by school.
- Danforth students generally may not register themselves for School of Medicine courses, with limited exceptions.
- School of Medicine students, particularly non-MD students, have limited access to register themselves for Danforth courses.
- CAPS students do not have access to register themselves for other schools’ courses.
- Students without access to register themselves for a course must submit a request for an exception. Use the Student Registration Exception form and select “Enrollment access to course outside of home school”. The form will route to their school registrar’s office, who will coordinate with the school offering the course if the request is granted. Students in the Brown School, CAPS, the Law School and the School of Medicine should contact their registrar’s office to discuss an exception.
